The Spanish Innovative Air Mobility Cluster (SIAM) has released the White Paper on Vertiports, a strategic document that lays the foundations for the development of these essential infrastructures for Innovative Air Mobility (IAM).
The presentation organised by Ineco( one of the three founding companies of SIAM) was supported by the Secretary General for Air and Maritime Transport, Benito Núñez, who stressed that: "the collaboration and coordination of all agents in the sector is key to joining forces and ensuring that this new air mobility is integrated in a safe, sustainable and accessible way, combining and balancing the development of the sector, while maintaining the current levels of service and safety of air transport".
Sergio Vázquez Torrón, president of Ineco and vice-president of SIAM, pointed out that: "we are facing an uncertain horizon, typical of the beginnings of major transformations. When the sector explodes, SIAM will have positioned Spain and Europe at the forefront.
The White Paper on Vertiports, drafted after a collaborative process coordinated by Ineco and with the participation of experts from the sector's major firms, deals with the technical, regulatory, economic and social aspects that condition the development of these infrastructures. Among its main objectives are to establish an adapted regulatory framework that guarantees the certification, operation and safety of vertiports in both urban and rural environments. Also, to promote innovation and sustainability and to foster social acceptance through strategies that promote harmonious integration into communities and minimise acoustic and visual impact.
The document underlines the economic impact of land ports, pointing to them as catalysts for new business models in strategic sectors such as logistics, tourism and emergencies. It also stresses the need for a regulatory and normative framework that accompanies the growth of the sector, guaranteeing the safety and efficiency of operations. Public-private partnerships will be key to the success of this initiative, promoting the creation of a more agile and sustainable mobility network.
From pilot projects to a concrete reality
With a clear roadmap for implementation, the White Paper foresees the deployment of these infrastructures in phases, starting with pilot projects and operational tests to serve as a reference for scalability at national and European level. The medium term will mark the move towards operational expansion. The consolidation of U-space will allow manned and autonomous aircraft to be integrated into an agile and safe system, while cities will adopt vertiports as strategic transport hubs. In the future, the industry must lead the way in fully automating operations and redefining global transport standards. Vertiports will not only be connection points, but intelligent infrastructures adapting dynamically to urban and technological demands.
The challenge of redefining air mobility
Aircraft with vertical operating capabilities usher in a new era in air mobility, redefining how we move in urban and remote environments. A sustainable alternative (reducing emissions, noise and congestion) and versatile, with the capacity to operate in reduced spaces, from rooftops to strategically located vertiports, adapting to both urban and rural needs and to all types of transport: passengers, goods, emergencies, etc.
These progresses, together with improvements in range and charging times, consolidate its potential as a disruptive option in air mobility, transforming not only transport, but also the design of cities and global connectivity. A challenge for which the industry is already preparing.
