The president of Ineco, Sergio Vázquez Torrón, represented the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda at the second Smart City Congress, organised by “La Red Española de Ciudades Inteligentes” ( Spanish Network of Smart Cities).

In his talk “Una nueva mirada integradora y sostenible” (A new integrative and sustainable vision), Sergio Vázquez Torrón highlighted the significance of the public investment foreseen in the recently presented General State Budget to promote sustainable, digital, and accessible mobility.

With more than 60% of the public space in cities occupied by vehicles, Sergio Vázquez Torrón highlighted the concept of the sensitive city, a new model where urban planning focuses its efforts on putting the citizen back at the centre. "We are facing a historic opportunity to recover public spaces for citizens. The MITMA budgets will contribute to decarbonising our long-distance mobility and our cities with 60% of the investments considered as green cities",

"We must configure a new mobility mix that gives a strong emphasis in urban mobility to pedestrians, bicycles and public transport to the detriment of private vehicles. Undoubtedly, commitments such as the Government's commitment to free travel cards on commuter trains and Renfe's medium distance trains will serve as an incentive to achieve this objective", the President pointed out.

Intelligence for sustainable cities

In its second edition, this congress brings together more than 300 attendees with the aim of demonstrating how disruptive technologies can be the lever of change to achieve more sustainable cities. Tourism, the use of data and disruptive technologies such as the metaverse, artificial intelligence, digital twins and BIM, or the smart and sustainable transformation of rural municipalities are some of the topics to be discussed at this event.

Made up of 93 member cities, 43 friendly municipalities and two other associated entities, “La Red Española de Ciudades Inteligentes (RECI)” (Spanish Network of Smart Cities) celebrates its tenth anniversary with the purpose of collaboration between municipalities to improve the quality of life of cities, through a management model based on energy saving, sustainable mobility, e-Government, attention to people or security.
